Students get cultured with Shakespeare
On March 17th, 2016 the students of Fuenllana participated in our traditional annual English Day. This year, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, the English Department created a variety of activities to highlight this theme.
Activities included a cake competition for 1st and 2nd of ESO which was judged by the cooking students in the profession training school and a music festival for 3rd and 4th of ESO with songs influenced by the themes of William Shakespeare. Other activities included: films based on Shakespeare’s plays, like “Much Ado About Nothing”, and “West Side Story” (_Romeo and Juliet_), PowerPoint presentations about the life of Shakespeare, short videos about the Globe Theatre, and Tudor style dancing taught by 4th of ESO.
The PE Department helped participate by creating sporting events for the afternoon in which students battled as the Capulet and the Montague families, homage to Shakespeare’s _Romeo and Juliet_, and in games like capture the flag and an obstacle course. The Art Department also helped with English Day by designing an amazing “face-in-a-hole”
Shakespeare poster and hosting activities in which students created an Elizabethan ruff from coffee filters or made mini Shakespeare figures out of paper. Special mention is also given to 2nd ESO C, who worked for more than a month on an English adaptation of Shakespeare’s _Midsummer Night’s Dream_, which they performed to the infant students.
Students of 1Bachillerato enjoyed some DRAMA training by our last year Assistant, Abi. They proved to be amazing actresses!
Overall, English Day was a great success. It was also a great opportunity for students to learn more about a famous English writer who has heavily influenced the English language. It gave students the privilege to become more cultured and to gain new understanding on topics that they previously had limited knowledge of.
A very special thank you to all those that helped participate in English Day; to the sponsors that offered prizes for the competitions, and to everyone who offered their time and minds to making English Day great!
Here’s to another successful year!
